They say it takes a village to raise a child - but William isn't a child anymore.
He’s a 21 year old man with Down Syndrome. Out of school, out of youth care activities, and on a waiting list for adult programs.
So Will is at home and he can't be left alone - and that makes things challenging for his parents who both work full time. The older siblings are out on their own and help when they can - but it isn't enough.
Any parent who has a child with exceptional needs knows that it can be crippling without additional support.
But it isn't easy to ask for help.
Many parents assume it's their problem and theirs alone.
The reality is that family and friends are more than willing to do what they can to help - big or small.

Will’s parents struggle to balance work and life with the level of care required for him since graduating from school.
The family logistics have changed since Will was in school and his parents now have more on their plates. No family lives in town so they need to look to their friends to balance parenting, careers, and relationships.
Caregiving is an act of love for Will’s grandmother who dedicates a great deal of her time to his well being.
Lisa’s mother Paula lives in California but comes up to Canada every couple months to look after Will. She’s known to Will as Monga and their day trips to movies, pools and burger joints are legendary.
Will’s parents step out of their comfort zone and take up an offer from friends to help look after Will while they are at work.
Retirees Shauna and Graeme Slee are long-time friends who look after Will along with their baby granddaughter. Basketball, movies and pancakes are typical highlights in Will’s day with the Slees who have opened their home and their hearts.
Through accepting help from outside the immediate family Will and his parents become part of a much larger family.
Sean and Cheryl Lightle have welcomed Will into their very large and loving extended family. This family-by-choice provides support and care for Will as though he was one of their own.
